Barbell Good Morning

Also written as BB good mornings, Good mornings

Advanced movement. Use appropriate equipment, safety pins or spotters, and a load you can control. If you are unfamiliar with the movement, learn the technique before attempting the programmed intensity.

What it trains

hamstrings, spinal erectors

Also: gluteus maximus

Equipment

barbell, squat rack

Setup

  • Rack the bar across the upper back as for a squat and step out.
  • Feet about hip width, knees slightly soft.

Execution

  1. 1.Brace, then push the hips straight back and let the torso fold forward.
  2. 2.Descend until the torso approaches parallel or until the back would round.
  3. 3.Drive the hips forward to return to standing.

Breathing

Inhale at the top, hold through the fold, exhale on the way up.

Form cues

  • This is a hip hinge, not a spinal bend.
  • Keep the bar pinned to the back.
  • Use noticeably less load than you squat.

Common mistakes

  • Loading it like a squat.
  • Bending at the waist rather than the hips.
  • Letting the knees straighten completely and locking out the hamstrings early.

Safety

  • Set safety pins at torso height so a failed rep can be dumped forward safely.
