Also written as Dips

What it trains

pectoralis major, triceps brachii

Also: anterior deltoid

Equipment

parallel bars or dip station, belt for loading

Setup

  • Grip the parallel bars and press up to a supported position with the arms locked.
  • Keep the shoulders pulled down away from the ears.
  • Cross the ankles behind you and brace the trunk.

Execution

  1. 1.Lower by bending the elbows, leaning the torso slightly forward.
  2. 2.Descend until the upper arms are roughly parallel with the floor.
  3. 3.Press back up to full lockout.

Breathing

Inhale as you lower, exhale as you press.

Form cues

  • Keep the shoulders down and back at the bottom.
  • Elbows travel back, not out.
  • Stop at a depth your shoulders can control.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping into a very deep bottom position and rolling the shoulders forward.
  • Flaring the elbows wide.
  • Bouncing out of the bottom.

Safety

  • Go only as deep as the shoulders tolerate comfortably — the very bottom of a dip is a common shoulder irritant.
