Alternating Dumbbell Lunge

Equipment

dumbbells

Setup

  • Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand at the sides.
  • Feet hip width, chest up, abs braced.

Execution

  1. 1.Step forward with one leg into a lunge, lowering until the back knee is just above the floor.
  2. 2.Keep the front shin close to vertical and the torso upright.
  3. 3.Push through the front foot to return to standing, then lunge with the other leg.

Breathing

Inhale as you descend, exhale as you drive back up.

Form cues

  • Step out far enough that the front shin stays vertical.
  • Drop the back knee straight down.
  • Push through the whole front foot, not just the toes.

Common mistakes

  • Taking too short a step so the front knee travels far past the toes.
  • Leaning the torso forward over the front leg.
  • Letting the front knee cave inward.
