Standing Alternating Dumbbell Shoulder Press

Also written as DB standing alternating shoulder press

What it trains

anterior deltoid, lateral deltoid

Also: triceps brachii, core, obliques

Equipment

dumbbells

Setup

  • Stand tall with both dumbbells at shoulder height, palms forward.
  • Brace hard — pressing one side at a time loads the trunk asymmetrically.

Execution

  1. 1.Press one dumbbell to lockout while the other stays at the shoulder.
  2. 2.Lower it under control, then press the other side.
  3. 3.Alternate for the prescribed reps, counting one rep per arm as the program intends.

Breathing

Exhale on each press, inhale as that arm lowers.

Form cues

  • Resist the urge to lean away from the working arm.
  • Keep the non-working dumbbell steady at the shoulder.
  • Same tempo on both sides.

Common mistakes

  • Side-bending toward the resting arm.
  • Letting the resting dumbbell drift down.
  • Rushing so the two sides stop matching.
