Incline Dumbbell Bench Press

What it trains

upper pectoralis major, anterior deltoid

Also: triceps brachii

Equipment

dumbbells, incline bench

Setup

  • Set the bench to roughly 30–45 degrees.
  • Sit back with a dumbbell on each thigh and kick them up into position.
  • Retract the shoulder blades against the pad.

Execution

  1. 1.Begin with the arms locked over the upper chest.
  2. 2.Lower until the upper arms are about level with the torso.
  3. 3.Press back to lockout without letting the dumbbells drift toward the face.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale up.

Form cues

  • Keep the shoulders back against the pad.
  • Press slightly back over the shoulders, not straight toward the ceiling.
  • Match the depth on both sides.

Common mistakes

  • Using too steep an incline.
  • Letting one arm lag behind the other.
  • Shrugging the shoulders up at the top.
