Fold-Up

Also written as Fold ups, Fold ups w/ medicine ball

What it trains

rectus abdominis, hip flexors

Also: obliques

Equipment

bodyweight, medicine ball where prescribed

Setup

  • Lie flat on your back with the legs straight and the arms extended overhead.
  • If a medicine ball is prescribed, hold it in both hands overhead.

Execution

  1. 1.Simultaneously lift the torso and the straight legs, folding at the hips.
  2. 2.Reach the hands toward the feet at the top of the fold.
  3. 3.Lower both halves back to the floor under control.

Breathing

Exhale as you fold, inhale as you extend back down.

Form cues

  • Both ends move at once — that is what makes it a fold.
  • Keep the legs as straight as you can.
  • Lower with control rather than dropping flat.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting only the torso and turning it into a sit-up.
  • Bending the knees to make the fold easier.
  • Slamming the legs and back down between reps.

Scaling & substitution

  • Bending the knees slightly keeps the pattern intact if the straight-leg version pulls on the lower back.
