Reverse Crunch

Also written as Reverse crunch, Reverse crunches, Reverse crunch w/ bands

What it trains

rectus abdominis

Also: obliques, hip flexors

Equipment

bodyweight, bands where prescribed

Setup

  • Lie on your back with the knees bent and the arms flat at the sides for support.
  • If bands are prescribed, anchor them low and loop them around the feet or ankles.

Execution

  1. 1.Curl the knees toward the chest, lifting the hips off the floor.
  2. 2.Use the abs to roll the pelvis up rather than swinging the legs.
  3. 3.Lower under control until the hips return to the floor.

Breathing

Exhale as you curl up, inhale as you lower.

Form cues

  • Roll the pelvis toward the ribs.
  • Keep the movement slow enough that momentum cannot help.
  • Press the lower back gently into the floor.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the legs to generate momentum.
  • Pushing off the floor with the hands.
  • Letting the lower back arch away from the floor.
