Reverse Hyperextension

Also written as Reverse Hypers, Reverse hypers

What it trains

gluteus maximus, hamstrings

Also: spinal erectors

Equipment

reverse hyper machine, or a high bench

Setup

  • Lie face down with the hips at the edge of the pad and the legs hanging down.
  • Grip the handles or the sides of the bench.

Execution

  1. 1.Swing the legs up until they are roughly level with the torso.
  2. 2.Squeeze the glutes at the top rather than arching the lower back.
  3. 3.Lower under control and stop the swing before the next rep.

Breathing

Exhale as you raise the legs, inhale as you lower.

Form cues

  • Drive with the glutes, not by arching the back.
  • Stop at torso level — higher is not better.
  • Control the swing between reps.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the legs so high the lower back hyperextends.
  • Letting momentum do the work rep after rep.
  • Gripping so loosely the torso slides on the pad.

Safety

  • Keep the top of the movement at torso height — this exercise is easy to turn into a lumbar swing.
