Also written as Russian twist w/ medicine ball, Russian twist w/ medicine ball or plate, Russian twist

What it trains

obliques

Equipment

medicine ball or weight plate

Setup

  • Sit on the floor with the knees bent and the heels down or lifted.
  • Lean the torso back to roughly 45 degrees and hold the ball or plate at the chest.

Execution

  1. 1.Rotate the torso to one side, bringing the weight beside the hip.
  2. 2.Rotate through to the other side under control.
  3. 3.Count reps as the program specifies — usually one per side or one per full pass.

Breathing

Exhale on each rotation, breathing steadily throughout.

Form cues

  • Rotate the ribcage, not just the arms.
  • Keep the chest up and the back long.
  • Move at a pace you can control.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the arms while the torso stays still.
  • Rounding the lower back into a slump.
  • Rushing so the rotation becomes a flail.
