Stiff-Leg Deadlift
Also written as Stiff leg deadlift, Stiff leg deadlifts
What it trains
hamstrings, gluteus maximus
Also: spinal erectors, lats
Equipment
barbell
Setup
- Stand tall holding the bar at the hips, feet about hip width.
- Soften the knees slightly and keep that angle fixed for the set.
Execution
- 1.Push the hips straight back, letting the bar slide down the thighs.
- 2.Lower until you feel a strong hamstring stretch with a flat back — for most people around mid-shin.
- 3.Reverse by driving the hips forward to stand tall.
Breathing
Inhale as the hips travel back, exhale as you stand.
Form cues
- Hips back, not chest down.
- Keep the bar shaving the legs.
- Stop where your back position stops, not where the plates land.
Common mistakes
- Bending the knees progressively and turning it into a deadlift.
- Rounding the lower back to chase extra range.
- Letting the bar drift away from the body.
