Stiff-Leg Deadlift

Also written as Stiff leg deadlift, Stiff leg deadlifts

What it trains

hamstrings, gluteus maximus

Also: spinal erectors, lats

Equipment

barbell

Setup

  • Stand tall holding the bar at the hips, feet about hip width.
  • Soften the knees slightly and keep that angle fixed for the set.

Execution

  1. 1.Push the hips straight back, letting the bar slide down the thighs.
  2. 2.Lower until you feel a strong hamstring stretch with a flat back — for most people around mid-shin.
  3. 3.Reverse by driving the hips forward to stand tall.

Breathing

Inhale as the hips travel back, exhale as you stand.

Form cues

  • Hips back, not chest down.
  • Keep the bar shaving the legs.
  • Stop where your back position stops, not where the plates land.

Common mistakes

  • Bending the knees progressively and turning it into a deadlift.
  • Rounding the lower back to chase extra range.
  • Letting the bar drift away from the body.
